Individuality Without Separation
Many spiritual traditions teach that each of us has a "soul" which survives physical death, either to enter the after-life in some other realm, or to become incarnated again in some future lifetime. What is the origin of this belief, and does it have any basis in actuality? Ishvara speaks to these questions in words I have transcribed and edited from a talk he gave on July 15, 2004. - TG.
Ishvara:
The problem comes from the long-held belief in separation, the long-held belief that "This isn't it," that the body is just a vehicle temporarily used by some other force. Arising from that belief is the experience that "This physical existence isn't important; something else is more important," causing one to negate Life's experience, to not be totally present. It causes one to have beliefs that there is something that needs to be perfected, that something is not all right; it opens a Pandora's box of superstitious beliefs and nonsense.
The awareness that I present is transcendent of such past belief. The direct experience that I have is that Life is energy, Life is intelligence, and each unique expression of Life is an embodiment of intelligence, of possibilities; it is not separate. That awareness doesn't satisfy the ego's need for permanence and identity. The ego wants endurance, survival. It is frightening to think of annihilation or ending, and so beliefs have arisen that there is something which is enduring, which does not change. That gives a false sense of security, but the sense of security was necessary for the primitive brain which could not grasp the bigger picture, could not recognize the essence, the vitality, the energy of Life itself.
As the brain continues to evolve, as humans continue to gain knowledge of the cosmos, of the workings of Life, that separate, fear-based perspective becomes unnecessary. It becomes no longer necessary to have the ideal of a separate identity, a separate existence, because as the brain connects with other brains, there is a unifying reality that is recognized, a synergy where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, where the parts are not "less than" but are vital to the whole of Life. Each unique expression of The Consciousness is vital to Life, and there is no need to fabricate the idea of something separate involved in that.
The more open, more connected you become, the happier you are, because you resonate with the rest of Life. You can be a wonderful individual and still not be separate; you can express unique attributes, unique possibilities, without being separate from the whole. Individuality does not necessitate separation.
The belief in a "soul" indicates there is a separate something that is embodied in form, which comes and goes as it pleases. That belief is destructive to Life, because one finds in that belief an excuse for not being all that one can be now, an excuse for not pressing through what one is facing so as to see a bigger picture. The belief has been an escape mechanism that has been used to make people feel better, but making a person feel better does not solve the dilemma; it does not bring a person to the realization of Life-as-it-is, as intelligence. Instead, it leads to escape. And so we have various religions and spiritual disciplines and traditions which advocate "This isn't it." As long as humans adhere to that belief, there will be suffering, disharmony, chaos and conflict.
The solution is to move to the next level of awareness and see that Life Is, that it is not separate, it is not "one thing doing this, and another thing doing that." There is an intelligence at work, an intelligence that is constantly evolving from the experiences of Life as each unique expression. In that constant evolution and expansion, there is no necessity for a "soul," no necessity for something that has to be perfected or learned. There is no necessity for something that comes and goes and takes on new bodies; Life itself does that. Life is constantly expressing itself in whatever needs to be expressed. However, Life is hindered by superstitious beliefs and concepts that keep projecting a reality outside, keep positing the "other."
As the brain evolves and establishes greater connections, one becomes very clear about this, and there is no longer the necessity to have something separate. One can embrace individuality and uniqueness, and not be separate, and not have an egoic need to prolong that. Life expresses itself through unique experiences, and a unique expression continues for as long as it needs to. As long as there is something to express, it continues to do so. When the expression has finished, that particular segment of the synergy is completed, and there is nothing separate that must be carried on after that, because the experience of that unique expression is added to the whole, the intelligence of Life, and the synergy expands, becomes more, as a result. It is a continuous, upward movement of greater connection.
This awareness will not be satisfying for a person who needs something separate. There is no way to talk about this to a person who is clinging to the ego identity of something separate; it is a futile discussion. As long as a person is clinging to that idea, the idea is serving the person in some way, and the person is not ready to see the bigger picture. Now, there is nothing wrong with that. People don't have to see the bigger picture, because whether one sees it or not doesn't change the actuality that there is no separation. One's beliefs affect mainly one's personal arena, and they don't change what-Is. However, belief does detract from the quality of one's life, because it prevents one from being fully present with what-Is. It causes one to hold back in Life, to bide one's time, thinking, "Well, if I mess up in this life, I'll have another chance." So one withdraws, becomes complacent, is not all that one can be.
If the beliefs of the past were true, humans would be far more evolved now than they are. Because beliefs have involved separation, withdrawal, "other," humans have remained stuck in chaos and suffering. I see that at some point, humans will take a leap and catch a glimpse of the bigger picture, becoming all right in their unique expressions, no longer needing the intellect to define them. Unfortunately, most spiritual searching is an intellectual pursuit. In the natural state, there is no need for that. In the natural state, Life Is, you see all the connections, and there is no need for superstitious beliefs "about" Life, because you have a direct experience of it.
